Who Am I To Teach Someone How To Lose Weight?

Chris Kramer Coaching

I like to say I’m still figuring out what I want to be when I grow up, but I’ve finally found what I’m supposed to do and it’s actually a little scary to put myself out there. You can’t get past 40 years old in this life without experiencing some good and bad life experiences, and coming through it older, wiser, and a little bit worse for wear.

My list of those experiences could be worse, but what I have gone through has made me stronger than I ever thought I could be. One of the most significant journeys I’ve gone through is weight loss. My heaviest weight was 233 pounds after giving birth to my youngest child.

It’s been a few years since I was that heavy, so I’ve gotten a little complacent and tend to forget how big of a deal it really is that I’ve lost over 80 pounds, and kept 68 pounds of it off for about 5 years now. I still have some to lose, but I don’t celebrate what I’ve actually kept off often enough. I get stuck in my head thinking I should be farther along in my journey and I still beat myself up a bit over gaining back 20 pounds due to hip arthritis that led to having both of my hips replaced this past year.

Because of those experiences, I’ve gotten a bit off track. I’ve been searching for what I have to offer my clients. I have learned many strategies, techniques, and systems about healthy eating and weight loss and have been looking for what I have that’s different from all the rest of the weight loss programs and gurus out there. I’ve been searching for my unique voice. I’ve found products that I believe in, and promoted them each at different times separately. I’ve been confused myself, and that has confused my message about how I can help people.

But today I had a session with my business coach and she asked me a question. She wanted to know why I haven’t focused on just weight loss. I had to stop and think. Why?

Well, there are lots of reasons. I work at a medical weight loss center with a Doctor, and a Medical Assistant who both know more about medicine than I do. I have a sister who is a Nurse Practitioner and knows more about medicine than I do. My mom was a Nurse – she knew more than I do.

I’ve watched person after person I know find another way to lose weight on their own and frankly have felt inferior in many ways to many others who know more than I do. So my question to myself has been, “Who am I to help people lose weight?” Here’s what my heart has answered.

Am I a Doctor? No.

A Nurse? No.

A Dietitian? No.

A Nutritionst? No.

Then what am I? Who am I?

I’M A SUCCESS STORY.

I’ve LIVED it. I know how to teach people how to lose weight because I’VE DONE IT. I’ve been in the trenches. Trial by fire. I’ve felt fat. I’ve felt all the emotions of someone who is overweight. I’ve felt the hopelessness. I’ve felt the fear. I’ve felt the loneliness. I’ve felt the isolation. I’ve felt the sadness. I’ve been there. I know how it feels. And I know how to get out of that place. Because I’VE DONE IT.

If that doesn’t qualify me, then what does? Another certification? More information so people believe me when I make suggestions for them or give them resources? No. That extra stuff is nice to know and I’m still constantly learning, but it’s not preventing me from knowing how to help people right now.

If you’re in that dark place where you feel fat, your joints hurt, you’re afraid of not being around for your family, or you don’t know where to start, but you know you have to do SOMETHING…

Call me. Let’s set up a time to talk. I’m ready to step up and be visible. I’m ready to start helping people lose weight and learn how to keep it off for good. Will you let me help you?
